Khandesh's submission to Akbar in 1601 effectively ended the sultanate's independent coinage, making issues from the final years of Ali Khan Bahadur Shah's reign — including this falus — among the last struck under autonomous Faruqi authority. The dynasty had governed the Tapti River valley since the late fourteenth century, but Akbar's campaign reduced it to a Mughal dependency within four years of this coin's minting.
