Amyntas was appointed king of Galatia by Mark Antony around 36 BC, having previously served as secretary to the Galatian tetrarch Deiotarus. His kingdom was a Roman client state assembled piecemeal — Antony added Lycaonia, parts of Pamphylia, and other territories to his nominal control. He died in 25 BC fighting the Homonadenses in the Taurus Mountains, an ambush reportedly arranged by a widow seeking revenge for her husband's death. Augustus subsequently absorbed the territory directly into the empire as the province of Galatia, making Amyntas the last independent king to issue coinage in his own name from this region.
