Hierapytna, located on the southeastern coast of Crete near modern Ierapetra, was one of the island's more aggressive city-states — it spent much of the third century BC in open conflict with neighboring Itanos over control of the eastern coastal territory. This bronze was struck squarely within that period of chronic regional warfare, when maintaining a functioning civic coinage was itself a political statement about institutional continuity.
The SNG Copenhagen 465 attribution places this firmly within a well-documented but sparsely represented series.
