Reverse description An owl, symbol of Athena and civic authority, stands facing right atop a monogram, flanked on either side by the conical piloi (caps) of the Dioskouroi, each surmounted by a six-pointed star. The civic ethnic legend KATANAIΩN is inscribed in Greek characters along the lower field, identifying the issuing city. The composition is well-centred within the flan, with the owl rendered in bold relief characteristic of Sicilian bronze coinage of the Hellenistic period.
