Reverse description The pious brothers Amphinomos and Anapias depicted in a scene of filial devotion, advancing in opposite directions as they carry their parents to safety from the eruption of Mount Etna. The two male figures are shown striding with purpose, each bearing a parent upon his shoulders or in his arms, the composition conveying urgency and heroic virtue. The ethnic legend KATANAIΩN is inscribed in the field or exergue, identifying the issuing city. This reverse type was a celebrated symbol of Catanian civic piety, commemorating the legendary episode praised by ancient authors including Strabo and Aelian.
