Gulab Singh acceded to the gaddi of Rewa in 1918 following the death of Venkat Raman Singh, and this medallic issue commemorates that succession. Rewa, a Baghela Rajput state in what is now Madhya Pradesh, maintained the right to strike gold under British paramountcy largely as a ceremonial privilege rather than a monetary one — pieces like this circulated among court recipients, not bazaars.
The Fahey reference (Fr#1374) places it within a very small body of documented Rewa gold, and surviving examples are rarely encountered outside specialist Indian princely state collections.
