Obverse description Central field dominated by the elaborately rendered imperial tughra of Sultan Mahmud I, executed in the characteristic Ottoman calligraphic style with sweeping diagonal strokes (tuğ) rising from the upper portion and bold looping forms (beyze) to the left. The tughra incorporates the sultan's name and titles in ornate intertwined Arabic script. The design fills the coin face nearly to the beaded border that encircles the periphery. The hammered flan displays the typical irregular surface texture associated with early 18th-century Ottoman provincial coinage.
