Obverse description Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx, each charged with five bezants, the whole surrounded by a bordure of seven castles — surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown with cross finial. The date 1809 is divided to either side of the shield, with the left numeral pair flanking the crown base. A circular Latin legend reading JOANNES D.G. PORT. E BRAS. D. P. REGENS surrounds the design, with four floral rosette ornaments punctuating the legend on the right side. The composition is bold and heraldic in style, consistent with Luso-Brazilian coinage of the Johannine regency period.
