| Obverse description | Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx, each charged with five bezants, the whole surrounded by a bordure of seven castles — surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown with cross finial. The date 1809 is divided to either side of the shield, with the left numeral pair flanking the crown base. A circular Latin legend reading JOANNES D.G. PORT. E BRAS. D. P. REGENS surrounds the design, with four floral rosette ornaments punctuating the legend on the right side. The composition is bold and heraldic in style, consistent with Luso-Brazilian coinage of the Johannine regency period. |

| Reverse description | Central device depicts a large armillary sphere mounted on a decorative pedestal, encircled by two diagonal bands representing the ecliptic and equatorial rings, all rendered in high relief with fine engraved latitudinal and longitudinal grid lines. Flanking the sphere to the left and right are two outward-pointing arrows or compass points. The Latin legend SUBQ· SIGN· NATA STAB· (Sub quod signo nata stabilis — stable under the sign under which it was born) is distributed around the periphery of the field, serving as the dynastic motto of Prince Regent João. The entire composition is enclosed within a broad reeded border, characteristic of the milled pattern coinage of the Rio de Janeiro Mint. |
