Applied over the lower portion of the bust is a circular Brazilian countermark depicting the crowned armillary sphere of the Portuguese Royal Arms, applied by Minas Gerais to validate the host coin for circulation at 960 Réis. The countermark partially overlaps the king's truncation and chest area, and displays a serrated border. |

The surrounding legend reads ·HISPAN·ET·IND·REX·MÆ with the denomination 8R and assayer initials J·P· visible in the field. The reverse retains the full milled border of the original Lima-struck coin. |
