| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King Carlos IV of Spain facing right, struck at the Lima (Peru) mint in 1804, with the legend CAROLUS·IIII·DEI·GRATIA encircling the effigy and the date 1804 in the exergue. Applied over the lower portion of the bust is a circular Brazilian countermark depicting the crowned armillary sphere of the Portuguese Royal Arms, applied by Minas Gerais to validate the host coin for circulation at 960 Réis. The countermark partially overlaps the king's truncation and chest area, and displays a serrated border. |

| Reverse description | Central design of the host Spanish colonial 8 Reales features the crowned royal monogram 'F·I·F·I' within a square shield, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, with the circular Brazilian countermark of the crowned armillary sphere applied to the lower central field. The surrounding legend reads ·HISPAN·ET·IND·REX·MÆ with the denomination 8R and assayer initials J·P· visible in the field. The reverse retains the full milled border of the original Lima-struck coin. |
