| Obverse description | The obverse retains the design of the host Spanish colonial 8 Reales struck under Carlos IV, featuring a laureate and draped bust of King Carlos IV facing right, with flowing hair tied at the nape. The surrounding legend reads CAROLUS.IIII.DEI.GRATIA, interrupted by a large oval Brazilian countermark applied at the lower center of the field. The countermark, applied by the Casa da Moeda de Minas Gerais in 1808, depicts the crowned Portuguese royal arms within an oval cartouche, with the denomination 960 inscribed below, all within a beaded border. |
