| Reverse description | The reverse retains the design of the host Bolivian 8 Reales, displaying the crowned Spanish royal shield flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with banderoles, representing the straits of Gibraltar. The surrounding legend reads 8R.P.I.HISPAN.ET.IND.REX, with mint mark and assayer initials visible to either side of the shield. A large circular Brazilian countermark has been applied over the central field, showing a globus cruciger (armillary sphere) within a beaded border, the official countermark device of the Casa da Moeda do Rio de Janeiro or Minas Gerais used to validate foreign silver for circulation in the Portuguese colonial monetary system. |
