Obverse description The obverse displays the Brazilian royal countermark applied over the host coin, which is a Río de la Plata 8 Reales. At center, the Portuguese royal arms — a crowned globe-like shield featuring the quintas (five escutcheons) of Portugal — is visible within a beaded inner circle, encircled by a wreath of laurel and oak branches tied at the base with a bow and surmounted by crossed swords or arrows. Flanking the central device are the denomination indicators '8' to the left and 'R' to the right. The peripheral legend reads UNION Y LIBERTAD with the mint identifier MATO GROSSO and date 1815, along with the assayer and mint marks, confirming this as a Potosí-struck host coin subsequently countermarked for Brazilian circulation.
