Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield displaying the five quinas of Portugal and the castle of Castile, surmounted by a royal crown — set within an ornate cartouche. The denomination numeral '960' appears to the left of the shield, and the date '18 16' is divided to either side above the crown. The circular legend reads JOANNES·D·G·PORT·BRAS·ET·ALG·P·REGENS·, identifying João as Prince Regent of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. Decorative rosette ornaments punctuate the legend on the right side of the field. The coin border is dentilated throughout.
