The 960 réis was struck on Spanish colonial 8 reales — cut, counter-stamped, and re-minted rather than cast from fresh planchets. When the Portuguese court fled Napoleon's invasion in 1807 and transplanted itself to Rio de Janeiro, the colony suddenly needed coinage at scale but lacked the silver stocks to produce it conventionally. The solution was to commandeer circulating Spanish American coins, overstrike them, and issue them as Brazilian currency.
The host coin is frequently visible beneath the strike. Collectors actively seek examples showing identifiable underliers — particularly Lima or Potosí 8 reales — making this type genuinely two coins in one.
