The 96 Stivers denomination is a peculiarity of the Dutch colonial monetary system inherited by the British when they took formal control of Ceylon under the Treaty of Amiens — and then again, definitively, after 1803. Rather than overhaul the existing currency immediately, the colonial administration continued issuing coins denominated in stivers, the Dutch unit, while the island was being absorbed into a British administrative framework. This denomination, worth four shillings sterling, was calculated to bridge Dutch and British monetary conventions during an awkward transitional window.
KM#79 was struck at the Soho Mint in Birmingham under Matthew Boulton's contract with the British government.
