| Opmerkingen |
The Monte di Pietà in Rome was one of the oldest pawnbroking institutions in Europe, established in the fifteenth century to provide credit to the poor at controlled rates — a direct counter to usury. By the 1790s it had long since evolved into something closer to a public bank, issuing fedi di credito that functioned as transferable instruments of credit rather than banknotes in the modern sense. This 90 Scudi note belongs to a particularly pressured moment: French revolutionary armies were advancing through the Italian peninsula, and the Papal States were struggling to maintain financial stability.
The denomination itself is telling. Round-number issues were supplemented by awkward fractional values to meet specific liquidity demands — 90 Scudi was not an arbitrary figure but a response to real transactional gaps in circulation.
