The 90 Pfennig denomination is an oddity worth pausing on. German municipal Notgeld of the early 1920s routinely ran to 10, 25, 50, and 75 Pfennig values — 90 was eccentric, and cities that issued it were usually plugging a very specific gap in local change circulation rather than following any regional convention. Gotha, as the capital of the Free State of Gotha within Thuringia, had its own administrative apparatus and issued Notgeld independently of the surrounding state bodies.
The "a" variant designation in the DeNG reference suggests at least a second printing or paper variant exists for this value within the series.
