Austrian municipal notgeld from the immediate postwar inflation period, when hundreds of small communities were forced to print their own fractional currency to cover a severe shortage of small-change coins. Tafelberg — a small locality in Lower Austria — issued this 90 Heller note under the authority of mayor Johann Morawetz, whose signature serves as the sole guarantee of value. The denomination itself is unusual: 90 Heller sits at an awkward multiple that suggests it was calculated to fill a specific transactional gap left by other denominations already in local circulation.
