Austrian Notgeld issued by the village of Steinkreuz — a municipality small enough that the 90 Heller denomination would have covered little more than a loaf of bread at wartime prices. The signature of Johann Riepl indicates local administrative issue, almost certainly the Bürgermeister or a designated treasurer acting under the emergency currency provisions that the Austrian government extended to municipalities during the First World War coin shortage.
Steinkreuz notgeld pieces are rarely encountered in dealer stock, a function of tiny original print runs rather than high attrition in circulation.
