Obernberg am Brenner is a tiny Tyrolean mountain commune sitting at roughly 1400 metres, and this 1920 Heller note is a product of the acute coin shortage that swept Austria in the immediate postwar years. With the Habsburg state dissolved and new supply chains in chaos, hundreds of municipalities across the former crownlands printed their own emergency Notgeld simply to make change. This particular 90 Heller denomination is an unusual face value — most municipal issues clustered around 10, 20, and 50 — suggesting Obernberg was working around a specific gap in local circulation rather than following any standard template.
Bürgermeister Hölzl's single signature validates the issue.
