Klaus is a small municipality in Vorarlberg, the westernmost Austrian province, and this 90 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Notgeld issued across the former Habsburg lands after the monarchy's collapse left local economies without functioning small change. The denomination itself — 90 Heller — is characteristic of Austrian municipal Notgeld, where odd values were deliberately chosen to discourage hoarding and force re-spending within the issuing community.
F. Seitenberg, operating under proprietor A.W. Müller in Vienna's third district, handled numerous small municipal contracts of this kind in the early 1920s.
