90 Heller Gröbming

Austrian notgeld from the Inflation period, issued by the Styrian market town of Gröbming after the collapse of the Habsburg currency system left small municipalities scrambling to produce their own emergency change. The 90 Heller denomination is characteristic of the awkward arithmetic of notgeld — towns issued whatever face values covered their immediate shortfall in coinage, with no regard for round numbers.

Gröbming's series was printed locally in very small quantities. Survivorship is largely a function of collector demand at the time, since much Austrian notgeld was bought by philatelic speculators before it ever circulated.
