90 Heller

Pürstling is a tiny rural commune in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria, and this 90 Heller Notgeld emerges from the acute small-change famine that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local governments across German-speaking Austria printing their own fractional notes — thousands of distinct issues, most in editions of just a few hundred.

The 90 Heller denomination is an odd one, rarely chosen, which suggests it was calculated to complement an existing set rather than serve as a standalone circulating piece. Signed by Joh. Wagner, presumably the commune's Bürgermeister or treasurer at the time.
