Neuhof is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and this 90 Heller note is exactly the kind of hyper-local emergency scrip that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1922. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small municipalities unable to obtain sufficient small-denomination coinage, and thousands of Gemeinden responded by printing their own — the Notgeld phenomenon at its most granular. The denomination itself, 90 Heller, is characteristically awkward, chosen to fill a specific gap in local transactions rather than conform to any tidy arithmetic.
Franz Himmelbauer signed as Ortsvorsteher — village headman, not a banking official. His signature is the sole guarantee backing this note.
