The Sovereign Military Order of Malta retains the legal fiction of territorial sovereignty despite holding no territory since the fall of Malta to Napoleon in 1798. Its coin issues are accepted as legal tender within the Order itself — a jurisdiction measured in a few rooms of a Roman palazzo. Andreas Bertie, a British-born Grand Master elected in 1988, oversaw a significant expansion of these numismatic programs, which fund humanitarian operations and carry genuine diplomatic recognition from over a hundred states.
