Additional information

João VI spent the years 1816–1826 ruling from Rio de Janeiro, having fled Lisbon with the entire Portuguese court in 1807 ahead of Napoleon's invasion. Goa, by then a colonial possession already three centuries old, continued striking copper fractions for local circulation under his authority — the armillary sphere a deliberate assertion of Lisbon's imperial reach at a moment when the court itself was operating from a different continent.

The Goa mint's copper output from this period is frequently found corroded or weakly struck, owing to inconsistent alloy preparation and aging equipment.
