The field is occupied entirely by a three-line inscription in large Roman capital letters: OBS at the top (an abbreviation of the Latin obsidional, meaning 'besieged'), NEWARK in the centre, and the date 1645 at the foot. The lettering is boldly but roughly cut, reflecting the emergency conditions under which this piece was produced during the Parliamentary siege of Newark-on-Trent. |
