Sebastian von Rostock served as Prince-Bishop of Breslau from 1664 until his death in 1671, presiding over a diocese still absorbing the aftershocks of the Thirty Years' War. Multi-ducat presentation pieces of this type were not struck for circulation — they functioned as diplomatic gifts and marks of princely status, produced in tiny numbers at the Breslau mint on special commission.
Friedensburg 2687 documents this as among the rarest of Sebastian's large-format gold issues. Fewer than a handful of examples are traceable across major auction records.
