Phygela was a minor coastal settlement in Ionia, situated near Ephesus, whose autonomous coinage output was extremely limited — this small bronze represents one of the few material confirmations that the city maintained even a nominal civic identity distinct from its powerful neighbor. The SNG Kayhan range covering this type draws almost entirely from a single regional hoard context, which explains why specimens tend to cluster in condition rather than appearing as isolated finds.
