Indonesia's 50th independence anniversary in 1995 prompted an unusually ambitious commemorative program from Bank Indonesia, of which this gold issue was the flagship piece. The .958 fineness — sometimes called "23 karat" — is a deliberate echo of traditional Indonesian goldsmithing standards rather than the .900 or .999 specifications more common in modern sovereign issues.
