South Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule came on August 15, 1945 — a date Koreans mark annually as Gwangbokjeol, literally "day of restoring the light." This note commemorates the eightieth anniversary of that event, issued in 2025 by the Bank of Korea. Commemorative banknotes from the Bank of Korea are relatively infrequent; the institution issued a similar piece for the 70th anniversary in 2015, making this a decennial series in practice if not by formal policy.
Printed by the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation at its Daejeon facility, the note is produced entirely domestically — no outsourcing to foreign security printers, which has been consistent Bank of Korea practice for commemorative issues since the early 2000s.
