| Descrizione del rovescio | Central device consisting of the crowned Portuguese royal arms, comprising the escutcheon of Portugal with its characteristic arrangement of five bezants (quinas) arranged in a cross pattern on an azure field, enclosed within a baroque cartouche of elaborate foliate and scrollwork mantling. The royal crown surmounts the shield at the top. The entire composition fills the field to the inner beaded rim, with no additional legend, the denomination being indicated solely on this face by the numeral 800 absent from this side — the denomination appears instead as part of the reverse design type on associated issues. |

José I inherited a mint system already under stress when the 1755 Lisbon earthquake — the most destructive in European history — obliterated much of the capital and disrupted royal administration for years. Colonial gold production remained the financial backbone of reconstruction, and the Brazilian mints at Bahia and Rio de Janeiro continued striking through the crisis without interruption. The Marquis of Pombal, who effectively governed Portugal through José's reign, used that colonial revenue to rebuild Lisbon on an entirely new urban grid.
The two mint sources are distinguished by their assayer marks, documented across the Bentes reference varieties spanning the full reign.
