Reverse description A bold cross of the Order of Christ occupies the central field, its arms extending to a beaded inner circle, with the date numerals 1743 distributed in the four quadrants formed by the cross arms. The denomination 800 appears in the upper field above the inner circle. The outer border carries a partial legend reading IOANNES V D G R P, identifying the issuing monarch João V, King of Portugal. The entire design is characteristic of the rough, irregular strike typical of hammered colonial coinage of the period.
