Additional information

João V's Brazilian gold coinage underwent a formal shield redesign in the 1730s as part of broader efforts to standardize colonial mint output between Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro, and the newly active Vila Rica facility — the distinctions between types matter to attribution but were largely invisible to the merchants and merchants' creditors handling these coins in transatlantic trade. The Rio de Janeiro mint, reestablished in 1703 specifically to process Minas Gerais gold closer to its source, struck this denomination throughout a period when Brazilian gold dominated Portuguese crown revenue.

Bentes distinguishes four die varieties within this type, spanning the full fifteen-year run.
