The face bears four archaic Chinese seal-script characters arranged in two columns, reading from right to left: 布第百八 (Di Bu Ba Bai), denoting the denomination 'Graduate Spade, 800 cash.' A single vertical line divides the two columns of inscription across the body of the spade. The shoulders of the spade are squared, and the foot terminates in the characteristic bifurcated prongs of Wang Mang-era spade money. The casting is typical of the Xin dynasty monetary reforms, with raised characters set within a recessed field bounded by a raised border. |
