The 2019 Beijing International Horticultural Exposition ran from April to October across a 503-hectare site in Yanqing District, drawing over 110 countries and international organizations as participants. China has used horticultural expos aggressively as soft-power vehicles since hosting the 1999 Kunming event, and the commemorative coin program attached to the 2019 edition was among the most elaborate in that tradition. The Yanqing site was explicitly positioned as a rehearsal ground for the 2022 Winter Olympics infrastructure in the same district.
