The Chinese national inscription 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery, while the commemorative legend 中国熊猫金币发行三十五周年纪念 (35th Anniversary of the Chinese Gold Panda Coin Issue) curves along the lower portion of the field. The date 2017 appears in the lower exergue beneath the temple motif. The design is executed in polished proof finish with frosted relief against a mirror field. |

The Panda series launched in 1982, and the People's Bank of China used this 35th anniversary issue to reintroduce a fixed-weight system — abandoning the face value denomination structure that had governed the series since its inception in favor of gram-denominated labeling. The 80 yuan face value on this piece is therefore a relic of the transitional moment: it was among the last annual Panda coins assigned a yuan denomination before the reform took full effect.
