| Reverse description | Central device comprises a large cross of the Order of Christ — a broad red-armed cross pattée rendered in relief — overlaid upon an armillary sphere, whose graduated rings and meridian bands are clearly articulated across the field. The armillary sphere, an emblem of Portuguese maritime exploration and sovereignty, is depicted in three-quarter perspective with its structural bands crossing diagonally. The surrounding peripheral legend in Latin capitals is separated by pellets and reads continuously around the coin's circumference. The design is characteristic of the Baroque period colonial Portuguese coinage, with strong, deeply struck relief elements. |
