80 Réis - Pedro II Large Crown, Bahia Mint

The 1695 Bahia coinage belongs to a critical transitional moment in Portuguese colonial monetary policy. Brazil's northeast had been flooded with underweight and clipped silver following decades of inadequate oversight, and the Crown's response was the 1694–1695 monetary reform — a forced recoinage that called in debased circulating pieces and replaced them with the new milled crown series struck at Salvador. The Bahia mint had only been reestablished in 1694 specifically for this purpose.

Survivors in collectible condition are genuinely scarce; most pieces that entered circulation were themselves subject to later recoinages as colonial monetary policy continued to shift through the early eighteenth century.
