| Reverse description | Central device consists of a large armillary sphere, rendered with prominent parallel latitude bands and diagonal meridian bands, positioned over and in front of the arms of the Order of Christ cross, whose four extremities extend to the edges of the field. The armillary sphere, a symbol of Portuguese maritime exploration, dominates the design and partially obscures the underlying cross. The circumferential Latin legend SVBQ. SIGN. NATA. STAB. encircles the device, reading 'Born under a steady sign,' a reference to the Order of Christ. The legend is separated by dot stops and set within a toothed or beaded border. |
