Obverse description Central device comprising the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms, depicting the quartered escutcheon with the five quinas (bezants) of Portugal and the seven castles of the Algarve, set upon a plain field. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown with elaborate jewelled arches. A circular beaded border frames the design, with the peripheral legend reading MARIA II D G PORTUG ET ALG REGINA, identifying the queen regnant by the Grace of God.
