Reverse description The denomination numeral '80' occupies the centre of the field, with the date '1840' positioned immediately below, the two elements enclosed within a wreath of laurel and oak branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow. A small ornamental star or lozenge appears at the top of the wreath. The peripheral legend PECUNIA TOTUM CIRCUMIT ORBEM (meaning 'Money goes around the whole world') encircles the design, separated from the inner wreath by the beaded border of the coin.

Additional information

Maria II reclaimed the Portuguese throne in 1834 following a prolonged civil war against her absolutist uncle Miguel I, and the copper coinage of her reign was issued into an economy still recovering from that conflict and from the near-simultaneous loss of Brazil as a colonial revenue source. The 80 Réis denomination itself was a product of the 1835 monetary reform, which reorganized Portuguese copper on a decimal-adjacent basis.

Gomes attributes multiple die pairings to this type; the 03.01 variety is the more frequently encountered of the early strikes from Lisboa.
