José I's accession in 1750 triggered an immediate recoinage program in Brazil, partly to distinguish his issues from those of João V and partly to address chronic shortages of small silver in the colonial trade. The Rio mint had only been operating independently from Bahia's oversight for a matter of decades at this point, and early strikes from Rio can show inconsistent planchet preparation — a known production issue specific to this type, not wear.
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which killed Pombal's rivals and entrenched the Marquis's grip on José's government, would later reshape Portuguese colonial monetary policy entirely. This 1751 piece predates that rupture.
