By 1825, João VI had been back in Lisbon for three years, having spent over a decade in Rio de Janeiro after the royal court fled Napoleon's invasion of Portugal in 1807. His return in 1821 left Brazil in the hands of his son Pedro, who declared independence the following year — meaning this coin was struck by a monarch who had just watched half his empire walk away. The Casa da Moeda de Lisboa resumed Crown coinage under considerable fiscal strain, and copper issues of this period are known for inconsistent planchet quality.
