Reverse description Central device depicts the Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the quintas (five escutcheons in cross formation, each charged with five bezants) and the bordure of castles — superimposed upon an armillary sphere rendered with horizontal and diagonal bands representing the celestial globe, symbolising Portugal's maritime empire. The entire device is set within a plain inner circle, surrounded by the continuous Latin legend PECUNIA.TOTUM.CIRCUMIT.ORBEM (Money goes around the whole world) in raised lettering between the inner circle and the milled outer rim.
