João VI issued this denomination from both Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro simultaneously — an administrative oddity that reflected the peculiar reality of a European monarchy governing from its colonial capital after the French invasion of Portugal in 1807. The Brazilian-struck pieces and Lisbon pieces circulated interchangeably across the Atlantic empire, though collectors have long noted subtle die differences between the two mints that the KM listing largely flattens into a single type.
João only returned to Lisbon in 1821 under constitutional pressure, ending the Rio mint's brief role as a royal production center.
