João VI — still prince regent in 1811, his mother Maria I nominally on the throne but incapacitated by madness — had relocated the entire Portuguese court to Rio de Janeiro in 1808 following Napoleon's invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. The Casa da Moeda do Brasil was pressed into supplying copper coinage for a colonial economy suddenly functioning as the seat of an empire. These 80 réis pieces were struck to meet that demand directly, a practical consequence of Lisbon's mint being effectively under French control.
