Osterhorn is a small parish in Holstein, and its 1921 Notgeld issue reflects the acute small-change shortage that plagued German communities in the inflationary period following the First World War. The Amtsbezirk Hörnerkirchen grouping was administratively typical for rural Schleswig-Holstein, where individual Gemeinden often issued their own denominations rather than coordinating through a district-wide series. The 80 Pfennig denomination is notably odd — most Notgeld issues clustered around 25, 50, and 75 Pfennig — which suggests this was calculated against a specific local transaction need rather than issued as part of a tidy set.
Konrad Hanf of Hamburg handled a substantial volume of northern German municipal Notgeld printing during this period, though the firm is less documented than larger contemporaries like Giesecke & Devrient.
